Role: Volunteer librarian

Location: Barlby Library and Community Hub, Howden Road, Barlby, YO8 5JE
Hours: Very flexible: anything from 2 hours per month to 3 hours per week; some volunteers work ‘seasonally’ – for example in the spring and summer only
Role Description: Barlby Library is an integral part of the North Yorkshire Libraries network. Since 2012 it has been run entirely by volunteers; there are 26-28 in all, two or three of whom are on duty at any one time during opening hours.
Key duties are: helping users to find books and information on subjects of interest to them; helping them to use the library computers; processing incoming and outgoing book deliveries. In addition, there are opportunities to help in work with local schools, in children’s story time and in promoting the library, as well as to join in with social events. Full training is given and support is always available from other volunteers.
No previous library experience is needed. Key qualities required are: ability to work with other people of all ages (16 upwards) and different backgrounds; willingness to help others; courtesy; discretion; honesty; ability to use, or learn to use, library computer systems.
