Leah tells of the enjoyment she gets from making a positive impact on her community as a trustee.
Q: What is your volunteering and who is it with?
A: I am Deputy Chair of the Sirius Minerals Foundation which supports charities and communities across Redcar and Cleveland, Scarborough District and the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. I am also a committee member on GoPlay – a small group of volunteers who have been fundraising to replace our village very old playground and create a more welcoming community space for residents of all ages.
Q: How did you find out about it?
A: I was approached by a Director at York Potash PLC when they were setting the Foundation up as they were working with my husband on land issues – so word of mouth! For GoPlay the Parish Council asked for volunteers to help with the playground.
Q: Why did you get involved?
A: Sirius – who would turn down the chance to influence potentially millions of pounds of funding to create generational positive change for communities in North Yorkshire! GoPlay – I have small children who use the playground and the condition of the equipment had been worrying me and it was also aimed at very small children so as mine grew the playground was less useful for them.
Q: What do you like about your volunteering?
A: I feel like I am contributing to making a positive difference in my community and it also gives me time away from work and family.
Q: Are there any challenges with your volunteering?
A: It can be challenging finding time for Board Meetings and the follow up work as a Trustee.
Q: What do you think is the biggest myth about volunteering?
A: That you need permission to volunteer or have to be a certain type of person – people don’t realise that everyone has a skills or knowledge or experience that can be useful in the right volunteering role.
Q: What would you say to someone who is thinking about getting involved?
A: Give it a go. You might not find the right volunteering opportunity initially and there is no shame in giving it up and trying another one.
