Rural voices need to be heard in discussions on the National Data Strategy
Humber and Wolds Rural Action (HWRA), Community First Yorkshire and Action with Communities in Rural England (ACRE) have been working with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sports to bring their interactive workshop which will engage local people in the National Data Strategy (NDS) consultation process to Yorkshire.
“Our society’s reliance on information and data is one thing that will continue to grow whichever party is in power and whatever the international context. Data is now a trail that we leave behind whatever we do, and the same is true for businesses and government at all levels. All this data can be turned into information that will benefit us, some could be used in ways we would not want and some of it we may not want to be gathered at all. Government is in the process of preparing a national data strategy to guide the way in which individuals, companies and government use data. They are keen to ensure this takes account of rural as well as urban situations. The coming of 5G networks, initially in urban areas, could easily result in the rural economy becoming left behind as sophisticated ‘always on’ applications are developed that work best in the cities. It is essential to get rural voices involved in discussions about a national data strategy and ACRE is working with the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport to make this happen.”
Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport are particularly interested in engaging with people whose voices may traditionally struggle to be heard. This may include:
- People living in rural areas
- People living with disability
- People who are at risk of being digitally excluded
- Prison leavers
- Older generation
- Care Leavers
- Young People
