Role: Sensory Sessions Facilitator
Organisation: Wilberforce Trust
Hours: As much or as little as you can — it is your decision.
Role Description: Our sensory sessions are run at our head office in Huntington, York. We have sessions for adults, children and infants with multiple disabilities including sight loss, hearing loss, autism and learning disabilities. The sensory room is enjoyed by all ages and is something we are proud of at The Trust. For example, we run cooking, baking, craft, and music sessions. If you have an interest and skills relating to a specific activity, such as yoga, cooking and baking, arts and crafts, or music, for example, then get in touch – or we’d love to hear from you if you have new ideas for sessions!
Our sensory sessions are so important to those who attend. There are many benefits from these sessions, from promoting mental and physical relaxation which helps to drop stress levels, to increasing concentration and focussing attention, and improving coordination, language, and motor development, and also providing security. The participants are also happier and have fun!
How much time will I need to give?
As much or as little as you can — it is your decision. There are several Sensory Sessions which run for approximately 2 hours every other week – you could run one session a fortnight, a month, every six months – we just ask that you are consistent in your commitment to running the sessions. All volunteered time is equally valued but an occasional contribution, for example helping at a fundraising event, is also welcomed.
What will I get out of it?
You will be provided with training and support to tailor activities to meet the needs of the sensory session attendees.
Volunteering for the Wilberforce Trust gives; a chance to meet new people; to develop new skills; gain experience and knowledge; to be respected and valued for your involvement; the satisfaction of helping others; and valuable use of your spare time. You will also gain insight into the third sector and a small local charity, and training and support from staff.
